The Washington Roundtable considers how the ideological commitments of Pete Hegseth, the Secretary of Warfare, are at play within the battle with Iran. Their visitor, the journalist Katherine Stewart, has coated the MAGA proper and is the writer of “Money, Lies, and God: Inside the Movement to Destroy American Democracy.” The panel discusses how Christian nationalism has moved from the fringes of the tradition to the middle of American navy energy, with Hegseth driving the shift. “It is a motion that at its core has by no means believed in democracy,” Stewart says. “It rejects the rules of equality and pluralism, and, frankly, the rule of regulation that represents the most effective of the American promise.”
